How to enjoy life now and ensure the future is secure?

27, April 2021 by Wilfred Ling Leave a Comment

In my previous article, I spoke another the similar objectives and common errors made by the YOLO and FIRE individuals. The former seeks to enjoy life now without thinking about the future while the later thinks so much about the future but forgetting the present.

Hence, I advocated that it is possible to enjoy now and yet has a bright future.

To do so, there are three areas that one must do in order to enjoy life to the fullness (now) and yet have the resources for the future:

First, invest in your own human capital. In layperson language, upgrade yourself. Yes, the government has been telling us the importance of upgrading as the economic benefit cannot be disputed. This will ensure we remain relevant and will not be disrupted by say an economic downturn. Yet, upgrading does not necessarily mean career upgrading. It can be an upgrade with the intention of landing in a dream job. You know, I have a client who had dream of becoming an entrepreneur since the day I met her (which was more than 10 years ago). After many years of trying, she now runs a successful ecommerce shop selling customised jewellery accessories. Not only is she having her own career, she is living her retirement by working in a dream job she created. By the way, she is very young. For her, she is already enjoying life to the full.

Second, you need to spend time and resources to ensure you are in the community. This community shall become your friends now and in the future. Nobody lives on the island on your own. Everyone needs friends. Perhaps the reasons why you may not have friends could be because you do not feel you need one or do not have the time to make one. Rest assure that you will need friends and when that time comes, it may be too late. Time and money are meant to be enjoy with people. You cannot play golf or tennis on your own. A glass of wine tastes best when you are with your love ones. When you travel, I am sure you agree with me having great travel companions are essentials.

Third, monetisation of your wealth has to be systematised so that you do not over consume it living nothing for the future. On the other hand, you do not want to be in the position to defer so much of your wealth for future spending when that future may not even come.  This sounds complicated but it’s a possible to outsource the monetisation of your wealth systematically. You know who the approach.

Do these three things and enjoy your retirement now!
