Association of Persons with Special Needs – APSN (e-Learning)

6, November 2012 by Wilfred Ling Leave a Comment

Last Updated on 24, February 2017

Recently, Association of Persons with Special Needs (APSN) invited me to speak to their members on the topic on estate planning for persons with special needs. I was told that APSN is the largest association in this sector. APSN has 4 schools and 1 adult learning center. One of the objectives of the APSN is to cater for the needs of the mild intellectual disability. I spoke on two days 31 Oct and 6 Nov 2012.

On 31 October 2012, the first talk I did was entitled "Introductory talk on estate planning for persons with special needs" at Delta Senior School. Despite the flash flood, about 24 attendees came. The intention of this talk is provide a basic overview of the topic so that the audience can appreciate what the topic is all about and how it can benefit their children with special needs. Once the attendees had an overview of the topic, they signed up for the more intensive course which I will conduct on another day.

On 6 November 2012, I spoke on the same introductory talk at Katong School. Again, it rained heavily! Fortunately, the rain almost stopped by the time my talk was scheduled to begin. So the attendence was better than expected. There were about 32 parents who came. Again, I invited them to come for a more intensive course on estate planning after this introductory talk.

The following were the agenda and the video recordings of both sessions. Enjoy!

Agenda

  1. What will happen to your child if you pass away?
  2. Why developing an estate plan for your child is the only way to ensure your child is well taken care of in the event of your demise?
  3. Case study: John & Mary have two sons who are still minors - Caleb an Martin. Caleb suffers from Down Syndrome while Martin is a healthy child. The speaker will showcase how he develops an estate plan by combining Wills, Trusts and various government schemes so as to ensure both Caleb and Martin's interests are looked after should the unforeseen happen to their parents.
